I was there: the Battle of Waterdale Road
John (Janusz) Ebel was a student at La Trobe University in 1970 and active in the movement against the Vietnam War. He burned his draft card, helped lock up a Liberal Minister, was shot at and took part in the Battle of Waterdale Road, when police ambushed and bashed student activists.

John gave his good account of the 2nd Latrobe Uni student march on Waterdale Rd & Vic Police attacking it. But he didn’t mention the 3rd march a week later, where mostly students were joined by unionists from the construction industry, swelling the protest to 800. The size of the protest and solidarity of unionists meant the police held back from attacking that march as it followed the same route as the previous week.
